Why Talkpool’s sensor is chosen for COVID-19 CO2 monitoring

Talkpool Article, February 16th, 2021

Talkpool produces one of the IoT LoRaWAN industry’s most popular sensors for measuring CO2 in relation to COVID-19 use cases. Most recently, Spanish solution provider Redytel IoT has been rolling out large volumes of the OY1210 LoRaWAN CO2 sensor. This article will provide an explanation of how CO2 measurements contribute to public health and why Talkpool’s sensor is chosen for this over alternative options.

The year 2020 was a year of adapting to a new living and working situation, due to COVID-19. Employees and students worked from home instead of in their offices and schools. Stores had to close or deal with a limitation on the amount of visitors inside. The hospitality industry was struggling to get customers. The big question for all was: how can we safely meet again in indoor environments?

This is where wireless CO2 sensors have been on the rise. In may Talkpool published a first article on this subject. Humans breathe out CO2, which therefore is a strong indicator of air quality status. High levels of CO2 can indicate a lack of fresh air and an increased risk for spreading viruses through the air, so it should be avoided in any situation. In many countries schools are already mandated to measure CO2 in every classroom, whereas other industries are doing the same in order to safeguard the health of employees and customers.

Talkpool recently delivered the first batch in a project where 2.500 CO2 sensors will be installed in different rooms. Why is exactly Talkpool’s CO2 sensor so popular for this application? There are three main reasons: reliability, adaptive reporting functionality and ease of mass deployment.

High quality, high security

Talkpool’s sensor devices are developed by a team of expert product designers, with a long track record in mass production of industry grade communication devices. This provides the benefit of the devices being reliable in use in important applications such as monitoring of CO2 levels in relation to human health. The worst scenario that could happen is a false illusion of safety being created due to inaccurate measurements or devices breaking down. With Talkpool’s focus on high quality and high security this scenario is avoided. Concessions on quality can’t be made in an IoT application that relates to human health.

Adaptive reporting functionality

Next to a high degree of reliability, the OY1210 LoRaWAN CO2 sensor also comes with a feature that is unique among the market alternatives, which makes the device excellent for monitoring air quality. This feature is the device’s adaptive reporting functionality, which allows for extra data reporting at critical moments, i.e. when CO2 levels exceed a critical threshold value or rise by more than 100 ppm. The benefit of this is that you reduce latency at the crucial moments when a room quickly fills with people, so that you can take quick follow-up action after receiving an alarm notification. Air quality alarms can’t come in 15 minutes late when immediate action is required.

Easy installation

Finally, Talkpool’s sensor devices are easy to install in large numbers. The full process, from production to installation and maintenance, is fully optimized so that thousands of offices, school rooms, retail stores and hotel buildings can be equipped with sensor devices in an efficient way, allowing for scalability and mass deployments. The non-invasive design of the sensor makes it fit in seamlessly in any room and the wireless solution allows for incredible ease of installation in existing buildings.

CO2 sensor devices can give an indication of air quality, but do not fully take away the risk for spreading COVID-19. Government recommendations around COVID-19 should always be followed. Talkpool is rolling out thousands of sensors to help many organizations improve their indoor air quality. Contact us to get started with your own air quality monitoring system.
